Green Oil UK Limited is a family run company based in Bromley in Kent. From product ingredients, to the bottle deposit scheme, to the recycled boxes used for wholesale orders, being green is central to all we do.

Green Oil has won awards for performance from the cycling world. Green Oil UK Limited, the company behind Green Oil won a Bromley Environment Award and was recently short listed for innovation in the BikeBiz Awards 2008.

Our cheesy slogan used to be ‘destroy limits, not nature!’. The slogan referred to destroying your limits of skill, stamina and speed, yet without damaging the environment with nasty toxic chain lube. However, this wasn’t inclusive of people who just wanted to ride to the shops.

Our new slogan isn’t calling for a military coup, so don’t worry. The revolution we all need to join, is one of making the world environmentally sustainable. Within this, we need to use bicycles more, and embrace the ‘revolution’ of all those cogs.

If people continue to use toxic chain lube indefinitely, future generations will have more pollution to clear up, aquatic life will suffer and cancer will spread. PFOA, a byproduct of Teflon, the ingredient used in many chain lubricants was classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a ‘likely human carcinogen’ in 2005.

If companies continue to use deforestation paper, and generally operate for short-term profit at the expense of the environment, the future will not be good for us, or for future generations.

We at Green Oil UK buy back our bottles, use sustainably sourced ingredients, and use recycled paper in the office. Our packaging is easily recyclable. For example, the plastic labels now used are the same type of plastic as the bottle, making recycling more efficient and reducing label contamination in the recycling stream.

End dependence on pollution join the revolution!

Simon Nash the founder of Green Oil, will be joining us on Tuesday 23rd March from 7:15pm onwards to give a talk on the company, how it all began and where it is going. He will also be giving demonstrations and a workshop on how to get the best from all the Green Oil products.

If you would like to come down and have a listen, a free beer or innocent smoothie and maybe get your hands a bit dirty, then email us at carnabyst@howies.co.uk or ring us on 0207 287 2345 and reserve your ticket!

Launching on Friday 26th February, ‘Carnaby Street: 1960 – 2010’ will celebrate 50 years of fashion and music.

The central feature of the show is a unique 3D timeline which illustrates key people, events and happenings in the area from being a green field site with a well and a scarecrow 500 years ago, to the iconic characters associated with Carnaby’s music heritage such as The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols and Jimi Hendrix.

A limited edition book of the same title; ‘Carnaby Street: 1960 – 2010’ will support the exhibition and will feature images from ‘60s photographer Philip Townsend and exclusive interviews with people who have lived and worked in Carnaby including The Who’s Pete Townsend.

The exhibition and book are the work of acclaimed curators and fashion historians Judith Clark and Amy de la Haye, who have curated exhibitions at major international museums including the V&A and Mode Museum in Antwerp.

The exhibition, 38 Carnaby Street, will be open from 26th February until the beginning of April 2010 and is FREE admission. It will be followed by a series of events throughout 2010 to celebrate Carnaby’s 50th Anniversary including a live music weekend in June and a unique fashion show in September.

Shared Interest is a co-operative lending society that aims to reduce poverty in the world by providing fair and just financial services. We have been part of the fair trade movement for 20 years and work extensively with community-based businesses in Africa and other continents to help them make the most of fair trade.

We work primarily by providing finance up front to producers, often via their buyers, to enable them to buy raw materials, tools and the other things they need at the time they need them. We also offer longer term loans and other credit facilities to support the development of fair trade businesses.

We currently have more than 8,700 members who have invested over £25 million to allow us to make a range of financial services available to fair trade producers and the businesses that buy, market and retail their goods.

There’s plenty more info here on the Shared Interest website.

It is taking place on Tuesday, 26th January at 7:30pm here at the Carnaby Street shop, drop us an email at carnabyst@howies.co.uk or give us a ring on 0207 287 2345 and reserve your tickets. As always we will have Organic Beer and Fruit Juice available, and we look forward to seeing you all!

We’ve had some great Wee Dos in store over the past couple of months. Both these clips are about helping the preserve the mountains for winter sports. Very apt with the recent snow fall we’ve had yesterday and today!

Salomon snowboards are helping to push the industry’s perceptions on how we can make snowboards in a more environmentally sound way- and even pushing ideas forward, finding ways to set up technology in order to recycle our boards after we’ve wrecked ‘em.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Respect the Mountains is an organisation helping to make tour operators and mountain resorts aware of how they can change their operations, to create sustainability in an industry which was not showing responsibility for their impacts on the environment they rely upon. They also raise key issues for skiiers and snowboarders to consider, when travelling to or spending time in the mountains.

At some point in the near future all of the Wee Do talks will be available to watch online.

He originally got in touch with us back in July about a project he was working on.

“On the 20th March 2009 The Guardian reported that the Royal Institute of British Architect’s president, Sunand Prasad, said that in his estimation 30% of architects were currently unemployed or underemployed. On 1st April 2009 I was made redundant from a prominent design studio in London and decided to set out alone as a freelance photographer.
A couple of weeks ago I was talking to friends and started to realise just how diverse architects reactions to redundancy have been. Some have found architectural work again, while others have turned to teaching or academia, labour on sites, medical admin, others have become artists, restaurateurs, chefs, photographers, lighting designers, web journalists… the list goes on.
So since then I have been working on a photography project taking portraits of architects who have been made redundant within the last twelve months documenting the new directions that it has taken them. My aim is to gather around 30 portraits in total by the start of September.”

His prints will be up for the next month, so come by and check it out. They are really stunning prints with a really apt concept.

Green Initiative for Tomorrow – Eco means a lot more different things these days. At salomon, it means lighter weight products, a signature bamboo snap, and new materials that are less harsh on the environment.

“A growing awareness of environmental issues and a demand for greener products has led to the new additons in equipment lines. Snowboarders are attached to the natural world, they are going to be more apt to buy something that he or she feels is ecologically better for the planet” – Alex Warburton, Salomon.

Salomon won a 2008 Volvo sports design award for Eco design for the construction of its Sick Stick snowboard. By using structural bamboo in the construction of the board, Salomom was able to both reduce the amount of resin in the board and make it lighter.

Last 5 places available for this…

With a chill in the air sweeping over London, we thought it an appropriate time to focus on an issue that winter sports enthusiasts should have a great interest in.

Our next Wee Do at the Carnaby Street store is tonight, 17th November; and we have Betony Garner coming in to talk about the Ski Club of Great Britain campaign Respect the Mountain.

She is passionate about green issues and has been trying to raise awareness about how to minimise the impact of snowsports on the environment for the last four years.

Respect the Mountain was a campaign launched by the Ski Club of Great Britain in 2004 with the aim of safeguarding the mountains for future generations to enjoy. Its basis is raising awareness and educating skiers, snowboarders, resorts and the whole snowsports industry on how they can do their bit to minimise their impact on the environment. The talk will investigate how the mountains have changed, how humans have impacted them and what we can do as skiers and snowboarders to help.

For more information about the campaign go to: www.respectthemountain.com

If you would like a free ticket to this event, please email (carnabyst@howies.co.uk) or call us (0207 287 2345) to reserve a space.

As always we have free organic beers and juice available. Doors open at 7.15pm. Spaces are limited so get in touch quickly.

Hopefully see you there :)

When your jacket is dirty this causes the fabric to ‘wet out’ and loose its breatability. If you wash your jacket in a standard washing detergent it will not help matters either, as it leaves residue behind. You could use a non-detergent based tech wash. This will not compromise the breathability or waterproofing of your jacket. However over time your jacket will loose its durable water repellency, which is where re-proofing comes into play.

We think you should get the best out of your clothes so… we are now selling Grangers 30° 2 in 1 Cleaner and Waterproofer, at the Carnaby Street store and Bristol store. This product has energy saving in mind, as you only need to use one wash cycle. It is bluesign certified; and is the only aftercare company to have this accreditation. Bluesign is the world’s only independant benchmark that guarantees products are free from harmful substances, and as such are safe for humans and the environment. We also have Grangers XT proofer spray available. Many conventional re-proofers rely on heat being applied to activate it. This means using your tumble drier or and iron. We don’t want you to use this energy unnecessarily. The XT proofer restores the perforormance of your jacket, with simply airdrying it after you have sprayed it.

I know this reads a bit like an infomercial…but hopefully we have imparted some knowledge on aftercare for you.

With a chill in the air sweeping over London, we thought it an appropriate time to focus on an issue that winter sports enthusiasts should have a great interest in.

Our next Wee Do at the Carnaby Street store is next Tuesday, 17th November; and we have Betony Garner coming in to talk about the Ski Club of Great Britain campaign Respect the Mountain.

Hold onto your hats people! We have the wonderful people (and dogs) from Battersea Dogs Home coming in next Tuesday 3rd November (7.30pm) to give a Wee Do lecture on their work – they will be bringing in two of their canine friends to assist with providing the more technical elements of the talk.

This is going to be a fantastic event. We are massive dog people here at the Carnaby Street store - next to our till we have two dog breed books, a pack of 3d dog cards, and four dog puzzles. We all prefer mutts, but we also just put together our top five dog breed lists to celebrate the moment. What would yours be?

As an added bonus we are providing a sneaky 10% discount, for half an hour, at the end of the talk – just a little bonus seeing as we just took delivery of our winter collection.

As usual the talk is free – however if you put your name down, but are unable to make it please let us know since others will loose out otherwise – just contact us at the store (our phones are down at the min) just email carnabyst@howies.co.uk. We will also have free organic beer and juice.

We will be taking donations from attendees for Battersea Dogs Home should you feel so inclined.

To say that I am excited is not a lie.
