I’m still working my way through the 2009 talks online, and have yet to see one that disappoints.
If you want to attend the 2010 Do Lectures, you can get tickets now (details here), but I’d be quick… I have a feeling the tickets will be selling out faster each year as these inspiring events gain the reputation they deserve.
We just mailed out our latest newsletter and this Do Letures talk by Michael Pawlin was one of the features on it. If you don’t subscribe then I didn’t want you to miss out on it.
When Jon Heslop was lucky enough to go to this years Do Lectures. The talk he came back talking about the most was Michael’s. This is what he said:
“He’s an architect who is well into Biomimicry. He’s part of a project named the ‘Sahara Rainforest Project’ who’s ultimate aim is to reforest the Sahara by building greenhouses that produce water by capturing it from the air. It’s total genius.”
The 2009 Do documentary is here. Well worth a watch.
My favourite lecture had to be Micheal Pawlyn’s. He spoke on Biomimicry in relation to an amazing project he is involved in: “The Sahara Rainforest Project”.
We had two great nights with the Rainforest Foundation and with Battersea Dogs home. A big thank you to them for doing the talks, and also to all of you who came along!
Next fortnight we have the people from Good Energy power supply coming in to give a talk. More details on that soon.
We are currently building a website which will host full video footage from each of the Wee Do talks we’ve had…so watch this space :)

If you’re reading this, then the chances are that you like a ‘good blog’. Emily Benet’s weekly Shop Girl blog is about the daily goings on in her mum’s chandelier shop. It tells the tale of the unusual shop and its following of colourful characters, alongside her burning ambition to be a writer and her unfolding romance. Her blog was spotted earlier this year by a keen free lance film director and an editor at Salt Publishing.
This week, Emily’s “Shop Girl Diaries” hits the bookshops and we will be having the Bristol launch party here at howies next Thursday evening. Emily will also be talking about the art of blogging and her journey from being a frustrated young writer to having her first published book .
We will also be showing an exclusive trailer for the short film that has been made of ‘Shop Girl’, starring Katy Wix (Torchwood) and Annette Badland (Cutting It).
Come listen, be inspired and enjoy some free beer, mulled wine and mince pies! It will also be a great opportunity to see the on-going Ink Dot exhibition if you haven’t already had a peek and pick up some christmas pressies!
The evening will kick off at around 6.30pm on Thursday 10th December Email bristolshop@howies.co.uk if you want a FREE ticket!
Tonight… Salomons Andy Cain will be coming into Carnaby Street to tell us all about their G.I.F.T. Project collection.
Green Initiative for Tomorrow – Eco means a lot more different things these days. At salomon, it means lighter weight products, a signature bamboo snap, and new materials that are less harsh on the environment.
“A growing awareness of environmental issues and a demand for greener products has led to the new additons in equipment lines. Snowboarders are attached to the natural world, they are going to be more apt to buy something that he or she feels is ecologically better for the planet” – Alex Warburton, Salomon.
Salomon won a 2008 Volvo sports design award for Eco design for the construction of its Sick Stick snowboard. By using structural bamboo in the construction of the board, Salomom was able to both reduce the amount of resin in the board and make it lighter.
If you would like a free ticket to this event, please email (carnabyst@howies.co.uk) or call us on (0207 287 2345) to reserve a space.
As always we will have free Organic beers and Juices available. Doors open at 7:15pm and remember spaces are limited so get in touch quickly.

Join us this evening from 6:30pm till 9pm at the Bristol shop for this month’s Wee Do. The good folks from youth charity Fairbridge are coming to talk about the great work they do supporting young people aged 13-25, developing their confidence, motivation and skills. We are especially looking forward to hearing about their mountaineering and breakdancing adventures.
