What ever you do, don’t hesitate.

ade posted this 31st August 2010 5:57pm

Tomorrow is 16 days to the do lectures.

They have a tent that can fit 100 people.

20 speakers and 80 attendees.

It’s 4 days long.

The location is idyllic and accommodation superbly comfortable.

The lectures inspiring.

The food will be local and made by Anja who worked here and is now writing her own cook book.

The company will leave you with friends and stories for life.

And I will be taking attendees running.

And they have just 4 tickets left

So if you want to spend 4 days washing around in intellectual compost that will  return you to your world ready to make change then buy now.

It is one of the most inspirational things that I have ever done.

Call 01239 62 35 84 and tell em we sent you.

Nick Hand

This morning I came into the office and had an email about Nick Hand who has helped howies with numerous things, he’s worked on our catalogues and taken hundreds of amazing photos and is generally a great guy.

Anyway last year he cycled around the coast of Britain taking photos, meeting artisans around the coast and making sound slides about them, well Nick is now off to carry on the journey around the coast of Ireland.

He starts next Tuesday from Belfast and again he will be raising money for Parkinson’s disease society, so far he’s raised over £6,000 and he’s hoping to double that over the next couple of months.

You can donate here http://www.justgiving.com/nickhand

You can follow him here http://www.slowcoast.co.uk , the site will be updated this week with the Ireland route so you can track him and you can see his blogs here http://nickhand.typepad.com/

Good luck Nick and have a great journey, I for one am looking forward to seeing new photos and hearing about how you get on along the way.

Take care, from everyone from howies

jon posted this 2nd March 2010 12:23pm

The Do Lectures have announced their 2010 speakers over on their blog.

Looks like a pretty impressive bunch.

I’m especially looking forward to Maggie Doyne and Daniel Seddiqui. Read about them both over here.

Ideas for change

The Do Lectures sent out their first newsletter recently, and if you aren’t already on their mailing list, you can  sign up here.

I’m still working my way through the 2009 talks online, and have yet to see one that disappoints.

If you want to attend the 2010 Do Lectures, you can get tickets now (details here), but I’d be quick… I have a feeling the tickets will be selling out faster each year as these inspiring events gain the reputation they deserve.

Michael Pawlin

We just mailed out our latest newsletter and this Do Letures talk by Michael Pawlin was one of the features on it. If you don’t subscribe then I didn’t want you to miss out on it.

When Jon Heslop was lucky enough to go to this years Do Lectures. The talk he came back talking about the most was Michael’s. This is what he said:

“He’s an architect who is well into Biomimicry. He’s part of a project named the ‘Sahara Rainforest Project’ who’s ultimate aim is to reforest the Sahara by building greenhouses that produce water by capturing it from the air. It’s total genius.”

The 2009 Do documentary is here. Well worth a watch.

My favourite lecture had to be Micheal Pawlyn’s. He spoke on Biomimicry in relation to an amazing project he is involved in: The Sahara Rainforest Project”.

Christmas Wee Do- Shop Girl

bristol shop posted this 3rd December 2009 12:54pm

imageIf you’re reading this, then the chances are that you like a ‘good blog’. Emily Benet’s weekly Shop Girl blog is about the daily goings on in her mum’s chandelier shop. It  tells the tale of the unusual shop and its following of colourful characters, alongside her burning ambition to be a writer and her unfolding romance. Her blog was spotted earlier this year by a keen free lance film director and an editor at Salt Publishing.

This week, Emily’s “Shop Girl Diaries” hits the bookshops and we will be having the Bristol launch party here at howies next Thursday evening. Emily will also be talking about the art of blogging and her journey from being a frustrated young writer to having her first published book .

We will also be showing an exclusive trailer for the short film that has been made of ‘Shop Girl’, starring Katy Wix (Torchwood) and Annette Badland (Cutting It).

Come listen, be inspired and enjoy some free beer, mulled wine and mince pies! It will also be a great opportunity to see the on-going Ink Dot exhibition if you haven’t already had a peek and pick up some christmas pressies!

The evening will kick off at around 6.30pm on Thursday 10th December Email bristolshop@howies.co.uk if you want a FREE ticket!

The Do Lectures is establishing itself as one of the most inspiring set of talks on this planet of ours.

But as the reputation of The Do Lectures grows, the ability to fit more people in the tent isn’t growing along with it.

It still only has 80 tickets for sale.

Tickets for 2010 Do lectures went on sale this morning.

So if you want to go, best be quick.

The Do Phone is 07760 757633.

Good luck.

Tonight… Salomons Andy Cain will be coming into Carnaby Street to tell us all about their G.I.F.T. Project collection.

Green Initiative for Tomorrow – Eco means a lot more different things these days. At salomon, it means lighter weight products, a signature bamboo snap, and new materials that are less harsh on the environment.

“A growing awareness of environmental issues and a demand for greener products has led to the new additons in equipment lines. Snowboarders are attached to the natural world, they are going to be more apt to buy something that he or she feels is ecologically better for the planet” – Alex Warburton, Salomon.

Salomon won a 2008 Volvo sports design award for Eco design for the construction of its Sick Stick snowboard. By using structural bamboo in the construction of the board, Salomom was able to both reduce the amount of resin in the board and make it lighter.

If you would like a free ticket to this event, please email (carnabyst@howies.co.uk) or call us on (0207 287 2345) to reserve a space.

As always we will have free Organic beers and Juices available. Doors open at 7:15pm and remember spaces are limited so get in touch quickly.

See you there!
