10 Things I Learnt from Nick Hand

pete posted this 29th April 2010 11:00am

My ‘design dad’ Nick Hand is coming down from Bristol today. I love having him around.
He brings knowledge and experience (and croissants).

I could probably write a top 100 things I’ve learned from working with him…
But, for now, here’s my top 10:

1. No coffee, no workee (same goes for cake).
2. Never rush. Take time to consider everything.
3. Just because you did something yesterday, doesn’t mean you should do it today.
4. You can do anything, even single-handedly.
5. A deadline is a deadline is a deadline.
6. But keep calm and carry on, no matter what.
7. And listen to nice music along the way.
8. You are neither superior or inferior to anyone else.
9. Be nice and nice things will happen to you.
10. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel, just spin it a bit.

howies wouldn’t be howies without him.

The Do Lectures have announced their 2010 speakers over on their blog.

Looks like a pretty impressive bunch.

I’m especially looking forward to Maggie Doyne and Daniel Seddiqui. Read about them both over here.

From Bristol to Italia: news from Venezia

bristol shop posted this 2nd February 2010 12:02pm

We got into work this morning and in our inbox was a lovely update from Jess who had been working in the Bristol shop for a few months up until Christmas. She is now off on a new grand adventure, and if you are a regular at our shop and have met the bubbly young Jess, we thought you would enjoy hearing about her news…

Buongiorno howies!

I’ve been in Italy for a month now, working as an intern for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice. Really enjoying the work so far – there’s a fantastic team of people at the Guggenheim.

My days out here tend to start off with the sound of church bells and end with a glass of ‘spritz con Aperol’ (a very Venetian, bright orange aperitif), with a fair amount of twentieth-century art in between. For those of you that know me, you’ll know this is pretty much my ideal cup of tea! Sono molto contenta a Venezia!

Here I am ice-skating infront of the Verona opera theatre, sailing across the Grand Canal and putting Severini’s Blue Dancer (Ballerina blu), 1912, to bed. PREGO!

Till next month,

Ciao!

Jess

The Do Playlist

ruben posted this 11th August 2009 11:39am

Isn’t collaboration great?

You tend to get a more interesting end product if more people are involved in the creation.

With that in mind, we’ve just started our second collaborative play list on Spotify.

If you have Spotify, click here to listen to the Do play list.

And you can add your favourite motivational, Doing songs to the list as well.

(if you don’t have Spotify, click here to get it)

If you have something to Do, this music will help.

And don’t forget the summer playlist here

Do play list

david posted this 6th August 2009 6:02am

some music is just a like a double espresso, it wakes you up, gets you going.

so thought it would be good to build a playlist for the do lectures and then put it on spotify.

here’s my starter for ten

1, fall back down – rancid

that summer feeling

RAIN

the rain is warmer than rain was in February.

and it’s falling straight rather than driving sideways.

that’s what makes it summer.

all we need now are some summer tunes.

we have loaded david’s summer playlist into a collaborative spotify project.

help us out, add your favourite summer tracks and they’ll automatically play in howies HQ.

Today in the London store we are listening to:

Vampire Weekend, Starsailor, Phoenix, Seasick Steve, Fanfarlo, Modest Mouse, TV on the Radio, and Discovery.

What are you listening to right now?

1000 up 4000 to go

A couple of days ago on my cycle ride around Britain I passed the 1000 mile mark (I also got to
Scotland) and thought I would do a list of 10 things I’ve learnt from the journey so far.

1  Cycling on your own is great, but being with your mates is better.

2  Where you get one hill, you get lots.

3  You can get a good cake anywhere in Britain.

4  You see some funny stuff.

5  Don’t spit into the wind.

6  You eat a lot when you are on a bike all day.

7  Going slow is better than going fast.

8  There are golf courses everywhere, why?

9  Our country is beautiful.

10  Camping is better than B&B’s (unless you need to charge batteries).

Expensive is cheap*

(*phrase from real madrid chairman)

right now, the brightest, the best leaders, the best thinkers, the most driven don’t go into politics. so my question is this: would we get a better calibre MP and therefore better government if we paid them more?

Do sponsor

david posted this 12th June 2009 10:26am
