September has only just began and…
the car parks are empty
the beaches are quiet
there are no queues in the supermarket or coffee shop
the mornings are clear & crisp
the berries are bursting out of the hedgerows
the evenings are drawing in
there’s a nip in the air before the sun goes down
jumpers are coming out of storage for snuggling into
there’s some surf on its way
hurray hurray hurray I love september

I have a stack of these DVDs on my desk from the good people at Surfers Against Sewage.

“View from the green room” is the Uk’s first environmental surf documentary – now, i’m not a very good salesman so i’ll just copy what they’ve written about it:
” ‘View from the greenroom’ examines the pollution issues of today through the eyes of Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners. Joined by Team Quicksilver, our international crew score barrel after barrel at some amazing new locations in Scotland, before breaking off to reflect on the dangers our coastline faces from poor shipping practises, the unregulated discharge of toxic chemicals, conveyor belts of litter travelling up on the Gulf stream and the threats to surfing from climate change. With a touch of humour we highlight these problems in true SAS style.”
So there it is.
First 6 people to email me with their addresses will get one, but only if you answer the following question correctly mind!:
“Do you want a free dvd?”
a) Yes
b) no
send your answers to hollie(at)howies(dot)co(dot)uk.
(Ps – the answer is A)

Freshly pressed.
The Bourgeois Bicycle Caravan has landed!
In the Autumn of 2009, the trio of Jimmy Bodean, Harold Hobart Hellybutt & Del Da-Foster embarked on an expedition, along the western seaboard of france, by bicycle. With trailers brimming with the necessities (surfyboards, box cameras, pencils and books of russian beat poetry) the trio went in search of the image perfect and the ultimate rambling tale.
This is the outcome, and very nice too.
Read more here… or pop into the Bristol shop and pick one up.
James Bowden is the guy who does lots of our catalogue shoots.
Enjoy.

We are back in one piece from the Autumn/ Winter 2010 shoot.
We drove to Ireland and it was pretty magical.
A perfect setting for the shoot.
A massive thanks to all that made it happen, the grand oraganisation, models, teamriders, photographers, writers and illustrators and to all the people we asked for directions!
‘Ahhh, to be sure….’ ( Irish accent!)

Bristol Surf Club was established in 2004 as a way for surfers living in Bristol to share lifts at weekends but has expanded a lot and they now have many active members, a busy social calendar and lots of group surf trips throughout the year in the UK and abroad.
The logical next step was therefore to put on their own competition. You don’t have to be a member to enter, just roll up on Saturday and take your chances.
The prizes are worth trying your luck for, not only are two howies surf thermals up for the taking but also a pair of tickets for Newquay Boardmasters Festival.

A bit belated this one but here it goes anyway. James has been doing amazingly well on his quest for world domination, that’s probably a bit strong but hey. Last month he was competing in Spain in a World Qualifying series event and came third which means he has qualified for the Longboard world championships in Makaha Hawaii which will take place later in the year. Woohoo!
A couple of weeks ago he was competing in the English championships and got runner up and then last weekend it was the first round of the British Longboard Union Tour and got another second.
Also he is on the cover of the new British Longboard magazine which is out at the end of the month and he has an interview in it as well
GO JAMES

The sports that we’re into aren’t team sports…they are sort of solitary really. But if you ask anyone about their best days riding, they will always say a day when they’ve been out with an awesome group of mates who inspire them. There are certain friends who push me more to ride faster and try something new.
I just stumbled upon this edit of an interview with a snowboarder called Jess Kimura. It’s from an all girl’s production Peep Show, which was released this winter. Anyway she sums up that feeling of riding with your mates perfectly. It’s a really sweet video, so check it out…

Well bank holiday weekend is around the corner and things are getting a bit warmer… (That said the sea is as cold as ever).
So if you’re looking to stay warm (New bay surf Thermal) or cool down (Good old fashioned tees). Not only do we have the works but we have 20% off the lot until midday Monday. That includes all our awesome samples. After a good surf you may find yourself sat around a camp fire wrapped up in one of our cuddy shirts thinking ‘best weekend ever’.
You can use this offer online and in our other shops as well – click here for more details on that.
